The Most Popular .ETH Names in the ENS Short Name Auction (FINAL)
The ENS short .ETH name auction started September 1st and just ended on November 5th, and it was one of the most popular NFT auctions at OpenSea during that period.
In total, there were 50,355 bids made for 7670 names, with the total worth of the winning bids at 5,698.97 ETH. The average number of bids was 6.56 (median 3), and the average amount was 0.74 ETH (median 0.052).

When it comes to the number of names bid on by length, 5 and 6 character .ETH names have an almost equal number, whereas 3 and 4 characters have far fewer. This is due to the fact that 3 and 4 character names have significantly higher yearly fees ($640 and $160, respectively) than the rest ($5). There are fewer shorter names available, so the higher price is to discourage squatting on the rarer names.
Just before the Devcon5, we published a blog post called “The Most Popular .ETH Names in the ENS Short Name Auction.” Now that the short name auction is officially over, we ran the same script and here are the updated results.
Popular website names
As previously mentioned, we allocated over 194 short names to legitimate brands through our short name reservation period. Hence we assume that most remaining known brand names went into bidding wars among name squatters.
Amazon ended up being auctioned for 100 ETH, which is 100x higher than the bid we observed early in the auction.
We understand the concern that these high value names are being snapped up by squatters, but don’t forget that we are working on DNS TLD integration which allows individuals and businesses to use their existing DNS name on ENS (e.g., apple.com).
